Hubbell Wiring Device-Kellems Advantage Series Pin & Sleeve Devices

Hubbell Wiring Device-Kellems always provides quality Pin and Sleeve connections, and now they have even more to offer! Hubbell’s new Advantage™ Series Switch-Rated IEC Pin and Sleeve devices are the highest performing for harsh environments. They are now available in both 30 and 60 amp.

As the name implies, this series has many new advantages. The Advantage™ Series is capable of mating with existing IEC 60309-2 pin and sleeve devices, so you don’t have to worry about how it will fit with what you’ve already installed. Connections are color coded by voltage to help easily matching them.  The pin and sleeve devices are designed for superior water ingress protection so it can withstand the toughest environments.

Having trouble checking your connections? The Advantage™ Series has long-lasting, highly visible green LED lights on both sides of the device. They light up to verify when the devices are properly connected. There is also an unswitched feed-through ground pin which provides continuous ground engagement.

In harsh environments, labels and markings can often wear off. The Advantage™ Series has their product ratings laser-marked into the devices so you never have to worry about identification washing off. The compact, sleek design makes the ergonomic device simply to keep clean. For food processing facilities, this is a great feature. Another new feature is the spring-loaded disconnect button, which can be easily used with gloved hands.

The Advantage™ Series exceeded standards, setting new benchmarks for mechanical and electrical performance. The Advantage™ Series also passed NEC® Section 430.102(B), IEC 60309-1 and -2 and the IP69k water and dust test. Tolomatic: Electric rod actuator cleans up after hydraulics

Hydraulic cylinders are well-known linear motion workhorses in industrial machinery.   They’re reliable, familiar, capable of high force, and affordable, but they’re not without disadvantages. The leading ones are fluid leaks, large footprint (with hydraulic power unit or HPU), cumbersome changeovers due to lack of programmability, and high maintenance costs.

The introduction of electric high force linear actuators means machine designers now have a choice. An electric rod actuator can replace a hydraulic cylinder and eliminate the need to clean up leaks.

A mess to clean up

A manufacturer was using hydraulic cylinders to press, form, and package face powder and other cosmetics. Problems with position control, speed, accuracy, and repeatability were rampant throughout the process. The machines needed to be cleaned constantly because hydraulic fluid leaked from hoses and pumps. That cleaning meant costly downtime and spoiled product. Even more downtime came when changing to different cosmetic lines or product mixtures because changeover was a time-consuming, manual operation.  Also, a problem: the hydraulic system’s HPU with its main pump and reservoir took up valuable floor space in the production area.

 

The manufacturer wanted an electric actuation system to eliminate the wasted space, costly downtime, and product quality fluctuations caused by the hydraulic system.

A clean, electric solution

Designers chose an RSA50 electric rod actuator with reverse parallel motor mount to replace the hydraulic cylinder. The RSA50 supplies significant force at faster speed and with better accuracy and repeatability than the hydraulic system it replaces. The servo motor/drive of the new actuation system stores each product line’s requirements so they’re readily available. Operators now have a flexible controls platform and can make changes on the fly during production.

The RSA eliminates messy hydraulic fluids, hoses, and pumps, and it frees valuable floor space by eliminating the large HPU. Also, the cost of the RSA solution was within budget, and ROI was significant – daily output doubled and product quality increased.

 

RSA electric rod actuator series

The RSA/RSM line of electric rod actuators includes

  • RSA-ST –– low-to-medium thrust capacity actuators. RSA-ST electric rod actuators deliver accurate, medium force performance making them ideal for replacing pneumatic cylinders. High thrust bearings and internal bumpers deliver heavy duty performance. A rigid, strong aluminum housing allows for easy mounting of switches and sensors.
  • RSA/RSM-HT — heavy duty, high force electric rod actuators for tough environments. RSA/RSM-HT actuators accommodate larger motors and deliver high force with excellent accuracy. These high force linear actuators can be ordered with either ball or roller screws and have enhanced high thrust bearings and heavy duty internal bumpers.

LUTZE DRIVEFLEX® Cable for VFD and Motor Applications

Variable frequency drive (VFD) cables have distinct advantages over traditional cables when used in drive and motor applications. When installed properly, VFD cables reduce cross coupling between drives and the shield contains and drains the electrical noise created by the drive. Their noise mitigation helps with the proper function of adjacent control systems and they help to reduce motor shaft voltage and bearing currents.

LUTZE DRIVEFLEX® cables are designed to cope with the power distortions in VFD applications. They offer superior electrical values for VFD or servo applications and are UL listed type “Flexible VFD Servo Cable, Flexible Motor Supply Cable” to comply with codes and standards regarding electrical wiring of VFDs. DRIVEFLEX® XLPE insulation has very low capacitance, high impedance and high voltage breakthrough resistance.  DRIVEFLEX® cables are safer and more efficient compared with traditional PVC/Nylon power tray cables or THHN wires in conduit.

LUTZE has recently expanded their DRIVEFLEX® line to include series A106 and A107, which are smaller diameter, general purpose series drive cables. Which type you use will depend on your specific project and requirements.

  • A106 series is great for most VFD applications and motors up to 40 HP and features a small outer diameter (OD) for easy routing and use in conduit.
  • A107 series cable is similar to the A106, but includes one shielded pair for brake or control signals.

Hazardous Locations: NEC 2017 Code Updates

A hazardous location exists when a manufacturing, storage or handling process provides a fuel, consisting of a flammable gas vapors, combustible dust or combustible fibers are or may be present in the air in sufficient quantities to produce explosive or ignitable mixtures.

Appleton recently released their National Electrical Code® Review. The Appleton experts have reviewed the 2017 National Electrical Code (NEC) and have developed a guide to reflect the code changes that keep you, and your employees, safe. You can download the guide from the Emerson website HERE.

Appleton has products that address these new requirements.

Appleton offers a variety of options in cable connectors and cable glands. The TMC2/TMC2X are suited for NEC cables MC and MC-HL. Both feature true 360 degree grounding and a compact design and are NEMA 4X/IP66 rated.  The TMC2 can be used in Class I Div 2, Class II and Class III. TMC2X features quick sealing liquid resin (cures in <30 minutes) and its design permits disassembly.  TMC2X is rated for use in Class I, II and III environments.

TC Tray Cable Glands are for indoor and outdoor use tray cables as well as extra hard usage cord in ordinary, wet or hazardous locations. They are Class I Div 2, Class II Div 2 and Class III Div 2 compliant. They feature a displacement seal that allows for a tight seal on cable inner bedding, as well as a removable insert in each gland that allows for fitting to terminate the widest range of cables available in a single hub size.
