Tray Cable – What is it and when to use?

Efficient cabling system design can take many forms with today’s wide variety of solutions.  Tray cable can be one of the simplest and most effective solutions in your facility today.

You might have heard the term “tray cable,” but do you know what it is and when you should use it? The National Electric Code (NEC) defines tray cables as, “a factory assembly of two or more insulated conductors under a nonmetallic sheath, for installation in cable trays, in raceways, or where supported by a messenger wire.”

Tray cable is a versatile cable that is approved for installation in raceways or cable tray.  Cables come in multiconductor and multipair styles, which means that they can be used for instrumentation/signal, control, power and lighting. Cable tray is used as an alternative to open wiring or electrical conduit systems and is great for cable management in commercial and industrial construction. Cable tray offers many benefits over conduit because cables are easier to access for installation, repair, removal and future development, as well as organization and clean, secure cable routing.

Tray cable is the ultimate all-around cable.  There are types that can be used in both wet and dry environments, in direct burial applications and sunlight resistant to be used outdoors.  Powerful enough to support structure of all sizes, tray cable is used in a wide range of manufacturing, industrial and commercial facilities.  Tray cable comes in a variety of multi-conductor and multi-pair styles that can be used for control, instrumentation/signal, power and lighting.  Insulation types are varied ranging from VNTC (Vinyl Nylon Tray Cable – least expensive), CVTC (Continuous Vulcanization Tray Cable) and ultimately to FREP (Flame-Retardant Ethylene Propylene Rubber – highest quality).  The insulation required depends on the environment and is usually dictated by the end user or engineer.

Noise Mitigating Cable- What Do You Need To Know?

Mitigating noise between cables used for high speed data communication is a major challenge. Luckily for us, and you, General Cable has come up with a solution! The GenSPEED 10 MTP utilizes revolutionary Mosaic Crossblock technology to shield the cable from other external cable sources without the need for grounding.  This design includes an insulating layer separating metallic blocks.  With this patented technology, there is no need for grounding since there is no metal-to-metal contact.

VFD Cables VS. Traditional Cables for Drive Applications

Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) cables have been around since the early 1990s in order to help minimize operational issues with VFD systems. The advancements in Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors and technology drives caused a significant increase in the high frequency information output from the drive inverters. That means that traditional power cables had issues handling these high frequency signals, which could lead to system problems.

This is why VFD cables are so important. They provide extra protection and are specifically designed for installation between a motor and a VFD. This reduces any downtime when using THHN or shielded tray cables. VFD cables are designed for higher stranding, robust insulation and overall better shielding.

  • Installed indoors or outdoors, wet or dry, buried, embedded, in a raceway, as aerial cable on a messenger, in cable trays, or as exposed runs secured to supports in accordance with NEC article 330.
  • Recognized for use on fixed or floating offshore petroleum facilities as recommended by the American Petroleum Institute.
