How to Select the Correct Tools for Proper Terminations

How to Select the Correct Tools for Proper Terminations

Properly terminating electrical wires is important to avoid terminal failure and potential electrical fires. Thomas & Betts has been working on improving that process for years, and now are introducing the biggest step forward in compression connections since 1957 when they trademarked “Color-Keyed” connections to reduce installer errors.

The Smart Tool+ is Thomas & Betts’ latest crimping tool, which is capable of identifying connectors and digitally recording data and uploading it to the Cloud.

Identifying Connectors

Pressing the scan button on the Smart Tool+ will cause its display to prompt to “Scan Smart Crimp.” Simply position the smart connector near the scanning location at the bottom of the tool, and the Smart Tool+ will show the smart connector material and size. The Smart Tool+ automatically recognizes and adjusts to Color-Keyed smart connector material and size based off a small chip included in the smart connector.

Crimping With Smart Connectors

Using the Smart Tool+ allows you to accurately crimp and assess the quality of your crimp.  Here are the five easy steps:

  1. Position stripped wire into connector
  2. Place connector into the crimp head
  3. Jog the Smart Tool+ trigger until red indicator flashes to verify it is properly in place
  4. Press and hold backup release valve if the crimp head needs to be re-opened
  5. Once everything is in place, press and hold trigger.

An indicator will light to signify whether or not the crimp is successful:

  • Solid green (successful)
  • Flashing red (distance or pressure not met)
  • Solid red (failed)

The Smart Tool+ keeps track of the crimps you’ve done and their data on different worksites and jobs. Temporary placeholders for site and job names can be used in the field and updated later.

 Crimping With Standard Color-Keyed Connectors

Smart Tool+ works with the standard Color-Keyed Connectors you already use. If you run out of smart connectors, there’s no need to worry. You can use the buttons on the Smart Tool+ to select the connector material and size, and the tool will record the data the same as a smart connector.

The Smart Tool+ is great tool in various markets you already use Thomas & Betts Color-Keyed Connectors in:

  • QAQC Jobs
  • Power Critical installations
  • Data Centers
  • OEM Equipment Manufacturers
  • Industrial Installations
  • Commercial Installations
  • Maintenance & Repair

Using the Smart Tool+ with the App

Where does all the data go from the Smart Tool+? Thomas & Betts has a free mobile app that works on Apple and Android tablets or phones. The tool can work offline, and stores crimp data until it’s convenient for you to transfer it to the mobile app. The crimp data can be uploaded to the cloud by installers, supervisors, and system administrators. After successfully uploading data to the cloud, active memory is automatically erased.

Thomas & Betts’ Smart Tool+ may be the right choice to help you make foolproof crimps, track data, and save time and money. If you are interested in the Smart Tool+ or have any questions, please contact us or your French Gerleman Account Manager.

Staying Ahead of the Electrical Trends and Standards

Last month, at our St. Louis branch, we offered customers the chance to learn about the latest trends and standards within the electrical industry at our Trends and Standards Update. Attendees gained knowledge on the latest innovative products that can help customers stay compliant with standards and the latest trends to help drive safety, technology and efficiency.

These high-level presentations offered cutting edge solutions to help customers stay ahead of the electrical trends and standards.  The seminar offered updates from Mersen, SolaHD, Thomas & Betts, Hubbell Wiring Device- Kellems and LUTZE.

These presentations covered the following:

Mersen covered SCCR codes and standards, including UL 508A standards. The UL 508A marking confirms that the industrial control panel has been certified by inspection. If the UL 508A’s construction requirements are followed, then a panel builder is eligible to have their panel listed by UL. Mersen also explained short circuit current rating (SSCR) and the importance of properly labeling panels for Arc Flash compliance.

SolaHD has updated its SDU Series DIN rail AC UPS. Their A Series still combines an industry leading compact design with a wide operation temperature range and unique installation options. The SDU provides protection from impulses and power interruptions that could be potentially damaging. This updated product also offers a new interchangeable optional “COMM Card” accessory, that allows communication between fieldbus protocols and industrial Ethernet. SolaHD has also introduced a new CF Relay Card option that has replaced the RELAYCARDSDU option.

Thomas & Betts has created an evolution of compression tools. Their Color-Keyed coding system allows high quality UL-compliant connections at a low installed cost. Thomas & Betts covered the basics on how to properly prepare cable, determine the proper connector, choose the correct tool/die and crimp inspection. They covered how the Thomas & Betts Blackburn Color-Keyed® compression connector system can make inspections and certified installations easier.

Hubbell Wiring Device-Kellems recently released the first UL Listed pop-up receptacle for countertops. To protect against spills, the receptacle assembly is sealed with patent pending silicone gaskets to repel liquids in both the down and up positions. The countertop receptacle is UL Listed to 498 Section 146 to be water resistant to a half gallon of liquid spilled on the device.

Hubbell also recently introduced both their Advantage Pin & Sleeve product line to promote safety and provide line of site disconnect and their inSIGHT Circuit-Lock™ Disconnects with LED indicators to promote workplace safety and improve troubleshooting time.

Do you know how Codes and Standards affect your choice of cables? The evolving NFPA 79 standard as well as NEC and UL 508a all have requirements on cable approvals. LUTZE highlighted how multi-listed cables are versatile and can help reduce the number of cables needed for code compliance. Also discussed were the latest trends in codes, standards and the general cable industry.  The great news is that LUTZE’s cables are designed for harsh environments and carry multiple approvals for standard and code compliance.

Product Spotlight: Thomas & Betts Dragon Tooth Insulation Piercing Connectors

Now you might read that headline and think to yourself, “French Gerleman has gone mad. Why on earth are they talking about Dragon’s teeth?” We haven’t completely gone crazy, but we are in love with Thomas & Betts newest product, the Dragon Tooth Insulation Piercing Connectors. In this blog, we will take a closer look at what it is and how it can help you. Let us dive right in!

With the Dragon Tooth, you can splice, tap and terminate magnet wire quickly and easily, without any problems. Tough, high temperature insulation on magnet wire that is used by electrical motor and transformer manufactures can create problems in splicing and termination. The durability of magnet wire insulation, while great, the process of removing the insulation by chemical stripping and/or mechanical means can be toxic, time consuming, and a safety concern. That’s where Thomas & Betts came in with a solution.

The Dragon Tooth eliminates the need for chemical stripping and other methods of removing the insulation. That sounds pretty amazing, right? It gets even better. There are no special operator skills needed. The connector and matching tooling do the entire job.

Thomas & Betts Dragon Tooth connectors and installation tools are designed to splice, tap and terminate magnet wire from 32 AWG to 460,000 CMA copper and from 20 AWG to 460,000 CMA aluminum conductors in motor and transformer applications. It can penetrate the insulation and oxide layers to make electrical contact on magnet wiring, with the result being permanent, low-resistance electrical connections that are capable of maintaining contact integrity throughout the life of the connection.

dragon tooth
Here are a few additional highlights on the connectors:

  • Made of copper alloy, tin plated, with teeth on the inner surface
  • Splices and taps have an open side enabling easy access to wire and making internal coil tapping possible
  • For aluminum to copper, aluminum to aluminum or copper to copper magnet wire connections
  • Supplied with bolt holes to accommodate No. 6 through 1/2″ studs and includes male and female .250 x .032″ disconnects
  • Splices and fork terminals accommodate wire sizes 24 AWG to 12 AWG in a variety of combinations, including combining magnet wire with stripped wire lead. For solid or stranded wire #20 to #4/0 AWG
  • Larger connectors accommodate circular mil range from 50,000 to 460,000 cm
  • Connector and matching tooling do the entire job

An electrically sound, low-resistance connection is established as a result of the combination of high-pressure at the edges of the teeth and the sliding action between the teeth and the conductor. The open barrel design permits midspan splicing and tapping.

For more information on the Dragon Tooth Insulation Piercing Connectors or how to select a connector, you can download the T&B Dragon Tooth PDF. Or, contact your Account Manager today to learn more! You’ll be saying, “how have I gone this long without Dragon Tooth?”

Product Spotlight: 5 SQUARE® Box from Thomas & Betts

Thomas & Betts has introduced a new line of 5-inch square boxes ideal for low voltage cabling systems and alarm devices.  The new 5 SQUARE® Boxes more than double the cubic-inch capacity of a standard 4″-square deep box, making it faster and easier to route wiring and make terminations in the box.

The 5 SQUARE® Telecommunication Box supports copper CAT5e, CAT6, CAT6A, CAT7, CAT7A and fiber optic cables as well as expected future generations of cables. The boxes include cable management posts to ensure minimum bend radius requirements for high speed data cables and enough interior volume to properly store the slack cable loop.

Avoid the hazards of ground faults and short circuits in fire alarm systems with the 5 SQUARE® Fire Signal Box. Its increased size and space added around the perimeter of an appliance helps to prevent ground faults and short circuits.

The 5 SQUARE® Boxes can save contractors up to 50% in labor costs. By storing the recommended slack loop of communications cabling in the box instead of in a closet or drop ceiling, terminating cables at the box becomes a job for a single technician, eliminating the need for a second technician to access the drop ceiling space where the cable loop is typically stored.

In addition to labor savings, our 5 SQUARE® Boxes provide equipment savings. Compared to standard electrical boxes, the larger size of 5 SQUARE® Boxes enables more circuits and zones to be pulled through, which can reduce conduit and installation costs.

Key features:

  • Twice the volume as standard electrical boxesTnB_SteelCity_5SquareBox
  • Integrated cable management posts prevent kinked and over-bent cables
  • Save up to 50% in labor, increase profits
  • Eliminate the need to remove ceiling tiles to access the slack cable loop, preventing damage and debris
  • Eliminate troubleshooting time and costs
  • Fully upgradeable system
  • Available in red powder-coat finish or zinc-galvanized

Ask your French Gerleman representative for information on how the Thomas & Betts 5 SQUARE® Box can help save you labor and material on your next project.

Featured Product: Thomas & Betts – Blackburn® Hex-Flex® Die System

The growing popularity of flexible-conductor cable, commonly referred to as flex cable, has created challenges and headaches for installers.

Due to the nature of flexible conductors, in certain applications, the traditional hex-style crimp leaves the connection vulnerable to a reduction in pull-out ratings. The indent-style crimp works better than the hex-style crimp, but creates the same problem on flex cable as it does on code cable — lack of ability to inspect for a proper crimp.

Thomas & Betts engineers solved this dilemma by developing a solution that brings the best of both worlds to crimping flex cable —Color-Keyed® HEX-FLEX™ crimp dies. The HEX-FLEX™ crimp uses a hex-shaped upper die to create an inspectable, verifiable, embossed hex crimp on the top side of the connector, with an indenter as the lower die to create an indent crimp with superior pull-out resistance on the bottom of the connector.

A Hex-Flex connection is quick with four easy steps. And each crimp takes less than a minute.

  • Unique dies provide a high-performance crimp on flex cables that can be inspected and verified
  • Can be used on flex cable as well as code wire (consult accompanying chart for proper die and tool selection)
  • Creates a hex-style crimp on the top and an indent-style crimp on the bottom — in one easy step
  • Color-coded for easy matching with Color-Keyed® lugs and splices to eliminate costly installation errors
  • Die-code embossed on connection for easy inspection and verification
  • Full range of sizes available to cover flex conductor sizes M through K
  • Fit most existing 6- and 14-ton T&B compression tools, as well as 15-ton tools with 15500-TB adapter — no additional tool investment required
  • Dies made from high-carbon tool steel with black oxide plating for durability, corrosion resistance and long service life
  • Creates a UL Listed, CSA Certified connection when used on Color-Keyed® compression connectors with flex/24 plus classes B, C, G, H, I, K and M

This video demonstrates the simple, four-step process to make a UL Listed / CSA Certified connection using the Blackburn® HEX-FLEX® Die System, for a high-quality connection at a low installed cost.

Ask your French Gerleman representative for information on the Thomas & Betts’ Blackburn® Hex-Flex® Die System and complementary compression tools.
